When there are delays in starting school or closures in other school districts due to weather, OSD is still in session. This is because we have a residential component and many students are already on campus. We honor the start times and closures of other districts; however, and want our day students to remain at home if necessary.
Please call OSD (phone: 503-378-3825 or videophone: 503-400-6180) to have your student's absence excused if your student stays home. Our most important consideration is your student's and family's safety. Please do not bring your students in if there are any concerns about weather. We will help your student catch up when s/he returns to school.
Please remember to contact your individual school district's transportation office to let them know not to come pick up your student if your student stays home or you drive your student to school.
We welcome you to our campus and look forward to having you experience our school. OSD is a learning facility. As such, we carefully plan visits so they will not be disruptive to the educational environment. Advance notice is required, Thank you. Please contact Sharla Jones for authorizing dates and times you would like to come.

The nonprofit organization, Friends of Oregon School for the Deaf (FOSD), is hosting a performance of “The Signal Season of Dummy Hoy” as a fundraiser on June 19 at the Pentacle Theater. William Ellsworth “Dummy” Hoy (1862-1961), deaf himself, began his baseball career in 1886 at the age of 24. Later, at the end of his rookie year with the Washington Senators Hoy led the National League in stolen bases—an astonishing 82. He set a fielding record for the Senators that still stands. Hoy also played for the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox, among other teams. The play, co-directed by Cherie Ulmer and Jeff Brownson, is about Hoy’s early entry into minor league baseball. It is peppered with rowdy players, a pioneering female reporter, a seasoned umpire and Hoy’s experiences, including lots of humor and poignant conflicts. “The Signal Season of Dummy Hoy” confronts us with our misconceptions about those who are different, highlights our desire to be understood and underscores the power of pursuing our dreams. The play will be interpreted and there will be a silent auction of baseball memorabilia and other items before the play and during intermission.
Tickets are $25 ($8 of which is tax deductible) and may be ordered by sending a request and check to: FOSD, PO Box 15053, Salem, OR 97309. Tickets are also available from FOSD board members: Roshani Shay, Linda Couoh, Judy Lorenzen, Joe Sendelbaugh, John Freeburg, Charlotte Iliff.
